September 2, 2022

Good afternoon, Carlin Students and Families,

As promised here is information directly connected to the first day of school. The first day for students is Wednesday, September 7.  This is a full day.  Students will be dismissed at our normal times 2:37 pm (elementary) and 2:40 pm (middle). Students need to register through SD 83 Transportation to ride the bus. Contact Phone number: (250)-832-9415.

Elementary Students:

For all Carlin students the school day starts when the bell rings at 8:40 am. Supervision begins daily at 8:20 am.

  • All elementary students returning to Carlin will line-up at the exterior door of their last year’s classroom. The current teacher of that classroom this year will welcome students. If students were in Ms. Matthews’ class last year, they will be informed of which of two classrooms they will go to begin the week.
  • New elementary students to Carlin will report to the learning commons through the main entrance doors. They will be met by our teacher librarian, Ms. Geri Ellis and our learning resource teacher, Ms. Darlene Williamson. Students will enter the school at the bell. The very important next step will be for teachers to take accurate attendance as this informs us for moving forward with students being in their classes for the year. We have had a significant number of new student registrations this week, 17 as of this morning.

Elementary students will spend at least the first day in their last year’s classrooms while we determine who has moved away and where to place those who have recently registered. Final class building decisions require accurate numbers and our school district staff is involved in determining which schools, if any, require the addition of a new class(es). We will keep our parent/guardian community updated as we have information.

Kindergarten students will begin their Gradual Entry on Thursday, September 8 at 8:40 am until 10:00 am.  During this time, with the support of Vice-Principal Sandra Major, parents/guardians will be invited to complete the CHEQ (Childhood Experiences Questionnaire) survey here at Carlin.

Middle School Students:

On the first day, middle students will enter the school as they did last year through their outside classroom doors. The teacher’s name as well as a class list will be attached to each middle classroom door at 8:15 am and there will be some staff outside with class lists to support students finding their classrooms.

Middle school students will go to the class we currently have them placed in. In the middle school we have placed all of the students that were on a wait list. These classes are not considered permanent as the school district needs to check our student enrolment in relation to class size and composition.

At this time the majority of our staffing is complete, however, one grade 8 class has a posting out as a teacher extended their leave recently. Once all staff is in place, we will send out a full staff list.

Our school website, https://car.sd83.bc.ca/ has a link to school supply lists and fees for the 2022/2023 school year, along with other important and helpful information.

We wish all of you a wonderful long weekend. Enjoy time with family!

Thank-you for your continued support.
