Code of Conduct

School District no. 83 and Carlin Elementary Middle School recognizes their responsibility to provide safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments for all members of its school communities. District Code of conduct available through this link: School District Policy 310

Making Good Choices

In instances of student misbehaviour, expectations are reviewed either at the classroom level or with the administration. We teach students to identify their misbehaviour and the underlying causes. Students are expected to accept responsibility for their actions and actively seek a way to fix the problem.

Carlin Elementary Middle School believes in a progressive discipline model and consequences escalate when behaviours are repeated or increasingly serious.

Student Dress Guidelines (School District Policy 315)

We recognise that students’ choice of dress can form an important part of their self-identity. The guiding principal regarding suitable student dress is that which fosters inclusivity and respect for others.

Students must not wear clothing which undermines the District’s commitment to safe and inclusive learning environments. This includes:

  • Clothing that depicts the use of tobacco, drugs or alcohol, cannabis, or any other age-restricted substance.
  • Clothing that advocates illegal activity.
  • The wearing of clothing, insignias, symbols or adornments that denigrate or depict hatred of a person or persons, including, but not limited to, clothing that denigrates or depicts hate based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, or age.
  • Clothing which contains profanity, pornography, or obscene images.

When there are differences in perspective, all involved have the duty to seek common understanding in a mutually respectful manner. Ultimately, the school administration or delegate has the responsibility to apply the dress guidelines. If any person dresses in a manner that contravenes this policy, the process used to apply the guidelines will be confidential, educational, body-positive, non-shaming, and non-punitive.

Cell Phones/Personal Devices

In keeping with School District Policy 122 Digital Citizenship and Ministerial Order 89/2024 cell phones and personal digital devices will not be allowed at school. While we understand the benefit of these devices for our students who have long bus rides, while at school cell phones must be kept in lockers/backpacks.

If you need to contact your child for any reason during the day, please call the office and our clerical staff will be happy to take a message and/or locate your child.

We are a cell phone-free school. No cell phones are allowed in classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms.
Consequences for cell phone use at school:
1. Verbal warning (put phone in locker/bag)
2. After multiple warnings.
a. Phone goes to the office to be picked up by the end of the day.
b. The classroom teacher will call parents/guardians to let them know about concerns.
c. The administration will deal with continued issues.
If devices are seen at any point going into or out of the bathrooms, the device and the student, will be sent to the office. The administration will determine if cell phones can be picked up at the end of the day by the student or by parents.
